Transmission over temp message help

2006 4.7 WK just got a message for the first time "transmission over temp" in dash/evac. I stopped to go into a store and check the transmission oil temp and it was in the hot zone on the stick.

2 nights ago I tried to boost a friend's car and had it charging his battery for around 10 minutes.*

Any ideas? Some say corrosion around starter wires/connectors, others change their starters and others have their computers rebooted and updated.
 
The factory service manual says this about the system status messages:

EVIC DISPLAY MODESSYSTEM STATUS MODE
Displays warnings and user interaction messages. Initial warnings will be displayed accompanied by a series of
audible beeps. Critical text warnings will be displayed until the failure is corrected. Non-critical text warnings will be
displayed for 60 seconds. The driver can scroll to view multiple messages by using the STEP button.

My thought is that if it hasn't come back up then you're OK. Have you changed the transmission fluid? Transmission fluid will break down under high temperatures (or with age), so if you did run your transmission too hot it would be a good idea to change out the fluid.
 

It comes on every time now, especially if I drive it for too long or on the highway after 10 miles it will show up.
Deaelr said it's nothing, I have to go meet the transmission guy there tomorrow morning. It's as if it's stuck in 3rd or 4th gear, it revs at 1500 rpm which is ok, but louder than usual drive noise at 100kmh. It may need a CPU restart I say because ever since the heavy boost I gave the day before this started, may have caused or drained some electrical crap. Fix your electrcical crap Jeep lol, if you want me to buy a new Cherokee in 5 years.
 
The dealer tells me they performed some cooler line flush, it may have fixed the issue, if I get it again it will need a transmission valve cleanup, which I don't feel like doing. I spoke to the transmission specialist over the phone a few times and mentioned to him all the possibilities that were discussed here and it helped.. The noise I mentioned is coming from the 2 front wheel bearings, not from a supposedly stuck 4th gear, they twice took it for a test drive.. No codes showed up or found either.

I will have to fix the wheel bearings now. I'm not sure how this happened at the same time, it feels like the right wheel bearing makes more noise, I remember going off a nasty pothole or some sh!t on the street a few nights ago...Can I can get the parts from rock auto, or are these guys going to pull a fit if I come with those? I wish I had a full warranty.

These are the parts I would need to do a Valve Body job as next resort if the Transmission Over Temp comes back on:

I've been getting the transmission over temp message ever since I gave someone a long boost on his dead battery....

I brought it to the dealer and we tried unblocking some transmission cooler lines I had changed a couple of months ago to see if it was the problem...The message stopped appearing for 2 weeks.

Than I had my battery recharged because my jeep would not start a days later...

Than yesterday I got the message back, the transmission fluid is not overheating and was also changed 1-2 years ago.

I will check all that was said on this thread, if anyone has any extra information, please let me know. thx
 
Fix anything you have on low voltage like a bad battery or a parasitic drain. Low voltage in the system will cause erroneous DTC in the PCM and will lead you to try chasing something that's not broke.... If after replacing the temperature sensor/ transducer and the DTC resets, check the wiring harness for a rub through or chaffing that will cause a short to another circuit.

Ok, I think I figured out what's going on. I got the transmission over temp message coming home and pulled over about 15 minutes later, left the jeep started, tried every gear while parked all seemed well, opened the hood and checked out the transmission fluid. All normal level around the 2 small circle mark. Perhaps heating up very slowly, perhaps not. I realized right after I put the dipstick back how friggin hot it's in the engine compartment. This is what the dealer could not duplicate or if they even popped the hood open, they did not get to drive it that long...

It's freaking hot in there, I need to ASAP install or replace certain things. The water pump I put in 2 months ago could be the culprit, but perhaps not. All the hear seems to be coming out from the radiator or where that big fan is blowing.*

Does this say something to anyone? It's seriously hot in there, perhaps this also why people get this message in the summer only, (I think that's what I read somewhere).

I also think the belt may be going too, it seems to be kind of swerving about a millimeter or 2. What do you think?

Maybe I need to change the tensioner too? There is some serious heat guys..what would you install to let it as much cool air as possible without damaging anything or costing too much in labor.

Perhaps a 8 year old Jeep WK needs some fixing or part replacements at this age?

Should I keep it, I've changed every fluid that needs changing and drive it for 10,000 miles a year. Drives like a beast in the winter, but I never press the gas, great jeep!

I really think the extreme heat is causing a sensor to feel it and go off. If not that than low voltage in the battery...

Could it be the quick fix low cost Cardone water pump I installed? Can a water pump cause or aid in causing heat? Is it the overused belt? Tensioner, radiator? Wtf*
 

Since the trans cooler is modular with the radiator, it is possible however, is your cooling system running hotter as well?, you can try an aux cooler fan and see if that makes a difference...... Just a thought, anyone checked the cooler and lines for a restriction?... Poor circulation will cause the trans. fluid to run hot.

Yeah cooler lines were checked and flushed. What do you mean aux fan?

Today I drove it a bit and stopped engine compartment was maybe 10-20% hot as compared to yesterday.

What is making so much heat under the hood? This heat is coming from the center front upper side. As if something is blowing it in. Could it be the cheap water pump?

Dying battery? Belt and tensioner dying?

Cmon guys how can I get more cold air under the hood?
 
Pusher fan is what I was implying on an auxiliary cooling fan. I've seen people install them on their jeeps, mostly mail couriers... The only thing that would make a difference on the water pump is the impeller , not because it's cheap but, the direction or the design profile of the impeller will have an effect on its function.. Food for thought, IF the water pump has something to do with it, theoretically it should also reflect the same on the cooling system..

I think I've might of gotten more clues after reading this page OVERHEATING Jeep concerning the transmission over temp message.

A few questions:

1) I'd like to change the transmission cooler inside the radiator, is that possible, what would the part be called?
2) Where is the fan? What is the part called? The Radiator fan?

I am trying to do the following:

I will put a new B&M transmission cooler in front of my condenser on the passenger side of the radiator since this side has shit loads of air flow provided by the mechanical fan. (by the way, there is NO ELECTRIC FAN THAT CAN MATCH THE CFM AIRFLOW OF THE MECHANICAL FAN ON A XJ) If you are having an overheating problem like me, spend it on a quality transmission cooler and bypass the radiator instead of a $400 triple electric fan setup.

If I'm not mistaken, I think there's also an inline transmission filter going to the cooler. Not sure which one but I think its crimped into the line before the fitting to the radiator.

My 2006 commander limited had the same trans over temp warning come on intermittently for a couple years. Couldn't find any real fix. Then my battery went dead so I replaced it then had AutoZone check my alternator because I heard a whine coming from that area. Diodes were bad. I changed the alternator and belt and removed the deflector piece off the airbox tube which is right by the transcooler/radiator. It worked. I haven't had the warning at all and my Jeep is running better than ever...the 11 mpg I was stuck at for so long all of the sudden increased to 15.7 mpg. So, I removed the plastic shroud and grill, removed the plastic engine cover, the whatchamacallit that pushes into the front of the engine disconnecting the electrical plug, drained overfill coolant tank, disconnected upper radiator hose at the engine, removed and replaced alternator and serpentine belt. Of course, I always disconnect the battery before I do anything. I did not air blow out any pins. Hope this helps.

I suggest you start with what you did before you got the code.
Dead batteries are notorious for giving off erroneous codes. At the same time overheating a trans is not good if it is real.

Clean battery terminals and posts. Clean the opposite ends of the
Go to a auto-shop like AZ or O’Reilly’s and have them load test the battery and alternator.
By cleaning you will have disconnected the batery so the codes will reset.
If it doesn’t come back you are good.

Take a clean white napkin and check your trans fluid. Be sure to wipe the wet end of the stick in a clean area of the napkin and observe the color. It should be red. Not burnt red or brown. If not red you did overheat the trans.
Check that the bottom of the radiator is not blocked and air is free to blow through. Any decorative grill parts reduce air flow. Blackouts. Inserts...

My 2006 WK did this occasionally... Some things I noticed... It was always humid when it would happen. Never happened when it was dry and hot. Dealer couldn't replicate it.

I installed a transmission cooler and would still experience the "transmission over temp" warning.

I truly think these things run hot and when it's humid the thermostat temp sensor doesn't like it.
