Im looking to swap out my Dana 35 rear and put in something stronger, something that can handle the 300-350 ft-lbs of torque my engine is making, i've thought about the Dana 44, but have also heard some good things about a ford 9" rear end, does anybody have preferences or opinions about what kind of rear can handle this? also i'd like to keep my dana 30 up front (atleast for now) and to avoid changing the gearing in the front would like to stay with 4.10 gears that i have stock so an axle compatable would be the preferable choice...thanks for the oppinions

thats what i hear, how difficult are they to find? how much do they run? how much fabrication is needed to put it in the jeep, does it just require the spring perches to be welded on in the correct location? does it come in the correct lenght? can i only do the rear and leave my dana 30 up front?[addsig]

might have to move the perches... and it is wider than the dana 30... you COULD leave them at different lengths... but you would probably want to space your front wheels... or cut the 9 inch down[addsig]

Don't forget that with a rear end like the ford 9 inch, you're gonna lose some ground clearance at your diff. I can't remember how much it is but I think it's an inch or two. I've heard that the ford 8.8 inch found in a lot of Ford Explorers is an excellent rear end also. I had a tech article out of a Jeep magazine about swapping in the 8.8.[addsig]

The 8.8 sounds like it would be the best swap for you. It's easy to find...they've been puttin them under explorers for years. They are also easy to find with 4.10 gears as well. Another cool thing about getting an 8.8 is the fact that after 94 they had disc brakes. Just do a search on google for "8.8 swap YJ"...you should find many tech articles to help out.[addsig]

It seems that most of the 8.8" rears come with a variety of gears, the closest to 4.10 being 4.11, would that make a difference or would it still have to be regeared before instillation?[addsig]

4.10, 4.11, basically the same gear ratio. It will work fine.

Get the 8.8, as mentioned it can be found with 4.11 gears, disc brakes, and even a limited slip differential

Most likely means that it doesn't have locker (makes both wheels spin the same all the time) I dont think Ford ever made one with a factory locker.[addsig]
