Why the extreme offset?

What's the rationale for setting tires way out beyond the body? It plays havoc on the bearings and has been know to snap axles.

Why the offset? :-? [addsig]

some people use spacers or strange offset rims to do that trick... some people do it for looks, some people do it for the functionality of a wider stance... personally, i'd rather just take it easy around corners and not care what people think about the appearance than to put my parts under stress... Though, if it is due to a larger alxe, then I am ALL for it... there are no setbacks to that, except maybe clearing tight trails[addsig]

wider is better - that is when it's due to a larger axle.[addsig]

OH you mean having the Tires almost completely out from under the car? I just like the slight (bout an inch) extending out from under the fenders. [addsig]

I got offset rims on my jeep to increase the handling for corners but mostly because jeeps are very prone to tipping on side angles when off-road. A wider stance will decrease your chances of a rollover. You will also need a more offset rim to fit some larger tires so they won't rub when cornering. If you are planning on larger tires, you don't need a huge offset but enough to enable you to turn the wheel all the way without the tires rubbing.[addsig]

It's called Center-of-Gravity (COG). When you lift a vehicle, you raise it's COG, it's more likely to roll onto it's side when in an off-camber situation offroad or an emergency evasive manuever onroad. If you go up, it's a good idea to go out and increase the track width to counteract the raising of the COG, making the Jeep more stable. It can be done with stock axles, and yes it increases stress to the stock axle shafts and wheel bearings.

But then again, so many jeepers do it just for looks  [addsig]
