I am really new at wheeling but am an aspiring mechanic and love jeeps and wheeling what little i can do so far with my jeep but ... I have a 90' 2.5L xj 5-speed. She runs strong when she isn't being picky but what would I need to make a non 4x4 .... 4x4 . I know i am gonna need transfer case * NP231* front drive shaft what jeep front axle would be best. I don't want to use ford or chevy axles either. what gearing would work and if i am gonna do the front axle might as well do the rear too .... so what is everyones opinion on axles that will be able to crawl and still go play in the mud.

Thanks for the help I am new at this

first off welcome to jeepz.

for the easiest conversion i would say get a dana 30 from a jeep xj along with the front drivshaft adn transfer case all for the same jeep. the tcase could be the tricky part. i believe the 4 banger t case has a different input spline count then the 4 liters do. if you can find a transmission and tcase from another 4 banger for cheap buying them as a pair may make your life easier.. good luck

Thnx alot for the reply and its kinda hard to find parts down in FL for wheeling besides mud we really don't have any parks for wheeling or free range land to play on without getting yelled at and chased off. but I will see what i can find and if anyone has any idea weather or not the 4 cyl. have same spline count i would greatly appreciate it

anytime.. hope it gets you going in the right direction. ask fellow members steelheadz or bounty hunter about the tcase spline count they should know.

I'd say your best bet is to keep your eye open for a 4wd 2.5L XJ oe MJ, could easily be found in the $500 range and you would have everything right there, scrap what you don't need.

The 2.5L 5spd is the AX5 and has a 21spline output into the 231 transfer case.

Should you find a 4wd 2.5L, the axles should have 4.11 gears and work fine for your application.

thnx for the advice bounty_hunter, I wish i could find an xj or mj 2.5L 4WD and make it a donor for $500 or so because in FL even if its not running people want $1200 for things lol  but maybe with me joining the army soon i can find one and bring the parts home to my jeep
