yet another lift question...

i'm looking too lift my 2k xj. i want 3". well enough to clear 31's without a problem. my questions are do i need to drop the t-case and would i need to upgrade the control arms?

I put an Old Man Emu 2-1/2" lift in my 00xj and I love it. It came with a T/C drop, complete leaf springs, coil springs, 4 shocks, and a steering stablizer. I added 1" greasable shackles. The maximum tire size I could fit with this lift was 255's on my 16" rims. I tried 265's but they rubbed. It has been a few months and now the 255's rub on the lower control arms(coils must have settled?). The arms curl around at the bottom(for strength?) and this curl sticks out far enough to just grab the knurls on the BFG's. I just order 1.75 coil spring spacers to gain an extra 1" lift in the front end (when the stock spacers are removed) . If I still have rubbing after this I might replace the L/C Arms. There is a guy in town with a Rancho 3" lift and his kit came with replacement L/C Arms and he is running 275's with no rubbing. If you go OME make sure you can bump it up to 3", 2-1/2" isn't enough. I went with OME because of all the rave reviews I read on the net. I spent the extra money for complete leafs to eliminate problems down the road like noises etc. If you can squeeze quick disconnects in your budget that would really finish the lift off nicely, those are my next investment. Have you had any problems with your 00?

Forgot to mention that I also removed the rear sway bar with no ill effects. The Jeep handles better that factory.

97-2000 XJ's are seriously prone to driveline vibes and the transfercase drop is a neccessity with just about any size lift. You can expect a little rubbing even with 3" of lift and 31's when offroad. I was going to put a 4.5" on mine but I'm selling it now on ebay. I'll probably get a budget boost and 30's for it and put the time and resources int the YJ I'm buying

Control arms

OK i'm confused.. if 2" lift is good enough to clear 30's how is 4.5" required for 31's? makes no sense.

Who said 2" was enough to clear 30's with no rubbing at full articulation?

You can run 31's on 3", 30's on 2", or 33's on 4.5". The trouble is to avoid rubbing, you'll need to extend bumpstops, and possible steering stops depending on the wheel offset/backspacing. This will seriously the jeep's ability and in my opinion, defeat the purpose. The other option would be to cut the snot out of the fenders and get new flares. I'm guessing you won't want to do that on your '00 XJ, but I could be wrong.

Joe - if it's going to be a daily driver and see light trail use it will be ok. If you want to take it and twist it up on the trails, get a bigger lift or get a smaller tire.

thanks guys for the help. it is gonna be a driver so i dont want to go too big. so i think a 3.5" is my best bet. now will less backspacing be better, or will it rub more? another question is the control arms, some lifts come with them and others do not. would it be a better idea to get adjustables? also, i only see 1" tcase drops. will that be enough, or would it be smarter to go with an SYE?

the more i look into this, the bigger the price tag gets. i want to do it cheap, but i want to do it right even more.

Check out Rusty's offroad. Good deals on XJ lifts. Also Jeepin.com - that is an XJ guy who sells rubicon Express lifts at the best prices I've seen. My buddy just bought a YJ lift from him.

As to backspacing, the stock wheels are 5.25" backspacing, so if you want to move them out I think 4.5-4.75" BS is what you want (more than that will make rubbing the flares an issue). Many just stick with the stock wheels and either live with it or adjust steering stops. I was going to go with 5" backspacing and adjust the stops just a hair, splitting the difference.

I would go with the skyjacker 8" kit if I were you! Expensive I know, but if I were you it would be your money and not mine so I spend it more freely!!

First I would tell who ever you live with to get a JOB!!! free ride is over!!
Mod the heck out of that XJ! ya!!!

sorry no point to this post.

about the skyjacker 8"... there wouldnt be any money left for tires, that might look a little funny

and you can spend my money however you wish, because there isnt any....besides tow hooks are first on the list, i was wishin i had them last weekend. but the shackle did the job

your commute down here would have been longer than the time we spent on the trail. besides, we dont need no hot shot showin us up.

Didn't see that earlier.. Just an intermittant guage issue, which is apparently very common and a quick fix. Other than that it's been great.
