YJ AX-5 transmission swap

I bought a cherry YJ with only 10K miles on it and have lifted it and put on lockers, and am putting in 4.88 gears. I am very worried about the durability of the AX-5 transmission in it. I can live with the 2.5 motor as it is for off rad use and as it hardly has any miles on it I hate to swap it too. I have see a few kits out there to swap to a NV 4000 or similar but for 3500.00 for the kit i can't swing that. Has anybody have alot of experience in theis and could recommend the best transmission swap at a reasonable cost.

I have he same question. my tranie is bad off missing about half of my gear shifts grinds 2 3 5 no down shift it is the time let me know what is said about the ax 5 please

There aren't many options but maybe the AX15 from behind a 4.0L, reuires a bellhousing from a 2.5 Dakota.

As for a low mileage AX5 that works well, use Redline MT90 gear oil and it will give you years of reliable service.

I bought an AX15 transmission which appears to be longer than the 2BF10 manual 5 transmission in my 1987 YJ.
I have the transfer case off the AX15 which I need to replace my cracked case which appears to be compatible to my existing transmission and the AX15, but I want to install the AX15 which appears to be too long for the application. Is there a different bell housing I can attach to the AX15 to make it fit my existing 6cyl 4.0? Or any other modification/adapters available.

New to this so be cool.

Thanks!

What is your ax15 from? I thought those came behind the 4.0

I would bet that your AX15 came out of a Cherokee, since that was the most common application for them. If you have a 1987 YJ then your motor(unless it was changed) is a 4.2L instead of the 4.0. The T-case should be the same, NP231. As the guy said above, the bell housing from a dakota will work, but only if you have a 4.0L which isnt the stock motor for an '87 YJ.

his tcase is a 203, isn;t it? i believe that is what mine is and mine is stock. the 87 had a different tcase then the rest of the yjs, for some reason
