Jeep Virgin about to take the plunge

Look for the basics like leaks, loose wheel bearings, ball joints, u-joints. I had a compression check done on mine before I bought it, which was fine. My mechanic did find that the front outer axle u-joints were loose (where the axle shafts connect to the hubs) and the used car lot replaced...

Rear diff suggestions for my CJ5

H1 Humvees have planetary hubs, in other words a geared drop-down hub from the axle. The hub centerline is below the axle centerline. It's an independent setup and probably not adaptable to a Jeep. Mercedes Unimogs have used a similar setup for decades with (I think) solid axles but they are...

Rear diff suggestions for my CJ5

Explorer or Ranger 8.8". The Ranger axle is about 1.5" narrower and might fit a CJ better, although not all of them are 8.8's and they have drum brakes except for very new ones that have discs. 96-01 Explorer axles will have disc brakes.

Love it. Best show on TV.

    Motor Oils

IIRC, the ads say it's "just as good", not better. Only way to know for sure is to run your normal oil for 3000, 5000 miles, or whatever, get a used oil analysis (UOA), then run NextGen for the same and get another UOA and compare. My issue is that NextGen costs the same as "new" oil. To my way...

    2.5L performance?

I finally got around to putting an Airaid intake on, it seems to hold speed on the highway a little better.

    Tire size

31's will look kinda small with a 4" lift. I'd go with 33's.

    Didn't think of that...

Once you get over 15" (rim size), tires get spendy. The Jeep has 235/75-15 Goodyear Wranglers because I know they're good in snow. $90 each installed, so the price is right. My Sport Trac has 17's, just got my second set of Firestone A/T's that were a screaming deal at $160 each for three...

    2004 TJ RHD conversion

What you've got so far looks great! As far as I know though, WWII Jeeps were left-hand drive. It's your time and your money but to me it seems like a lot of work for no advantage unless your day job is delivering mail.

    Gas Mileage?

On-road, 4-banger TJ's aren't any better on gas than 6's. If you have an automatic like ours, it's actually worse. According to my cousin, who's had more Jeeps than I've had underwear, off-road a 4-banger is much better on gas than a 6. If you're going where there isn't any gas for a while...

    Best batteries

Take your old battery with you. They keep a shopping cart for them at the service desk and give you $9 for it after you buy the new one. At least that's how it works at the Wally-Mart here.

    What is your daily car?

No. Almost 60k, no problems so far. Never read any complaints about it on the Sport Trac board. I did change the diff lube at 30k and will do it again at 60k. The 2nd Gen Tracs are a piece of cake, the rear diff cover has a drain plug. :shades: Where there IS an issue is when you want to...

    What is your daily car?

The Jeep is really for my daughter. My daily ride is a 2008 Sport Trac. Gibson cat-back, K&N, Firestone A/T's. Leased it new and bought it earlier this year because they aren't making them any more. Always loved cars. At this point I have a fleet to tinker with. '08 Sport Trac - mine. The...

    mileage

The Jeep is for my daughter, mpg with the 4-banger, 3 speed automatic, and as near as I can tell 4.11 gears, is too awful to speak of. That said, I have played with different speeds in my '08 Sport Trac which has a digital mpg thingy on the dash. I routinely take a toll road between my two...

    Best batteries

Consumer Reports tested batteries a couple years ago. In most sizes the Duralast Gold (Auto Zone) and Maxx Start or whatever the top line battery is called at Wal-Mart rated highly, as well as the top shelf batteries at NAPA and from AC. I had always bought Die-Hards but they came in at the...

    3 wheel drive jeep

If you have to ask, then I strongly recommend not doing it yourself. No offense. :shades: I am not running this setup currently, but when I had more time for 'froading my preference was a limited-slip in front and a locker in the rear. Less likely to break parts and better for snow.

    Hemi

AEV* has a kit also. I don't know if it works with a manual transmission or not. I'm guessing you would have to use the transmission out of a 4x4 Dodge truck. I rather doubt that a Challenger 6 speed could be adapted to the t-case but I can't say for certain. *American Expedition Vehicles...

    1997 jeep wrangler fuel filter

Which is why our Jeep has a new fuel filter. It's a big sock-type thing, supposed to last for the life of the vehicle or the life of the fuel pump, whichever comes first.
