1983 cj5 restoration

I was told the tub was stronger without the tailgate and less to rattle. I hated mine didn't come with one. I think they offer a kit to add a gate but as rough as mine is I wouldn't go to the trouble. I've got an old Willys tailgate hanging on my basement wall, I tell people I'm going to build a Jeep out of it. Lol
 
I was noticing your in need of a dropped pittman arm. I bet it had terribal bump steer. Really cool Jeep though, good luck with the resto.
 

I stand corrected, you are right. seems like a tailgate was standard on military jeeps and a factory option on the civilian jeeps. Sorry about that.
 
Day 4

Hey everyone, today was day 4 of working on the jeep. today I torn down, cleaned, installed a new rebuild kit and reassembled my Holley carb. I just have one question. I know everyone recommends a 4 barrel over a 2 barrel carb because they are better than the original carb that came with cj5. But I also had someone tell me to get rid of the Holley I have because they can be temperamental and get a Edelbrock and I wont have any problems. What are everyones thoughts?

Personally I like the motorcraft 2 bbl that's on my 304 v8. I had to rebuild it soon after I got my Jeep but like the rest of the Jeep it was due. It has a spring on the float to compensate for offroad bounce. It's reasonable on fuel for an old V8 (14 MPG) and the choke works like it should. Maybe I got lucky with the rebuild or even the carb itself. I have a Holley 600 and alum intake sitting on a shelf that I have no intention of swapping.
I think you should know that CFM's are rated different on 2 and 4 barrel carbs. I don't know enough to offer suggestions, but you may want to study up a bit. Maybe someone one the forum can chime in on this.

One last thing, I had a buddy that just built a CJ5 from the frame up. Turned out super nice had the 304/4speed. He had an Edlebrock 4bbl on his and hated it, he complained alot of the carb. He often mentioned why would you ever need a 4bbl on a Jeep anyway. I've wondered that myself. Just throwin' that out there.
 

Maybe I'm wrong for the negative press on the motorcraft carburetor , I would not want anyone to think the carb is bad. I rebuilt the 2150 that was on my '78 cherokee 360 and it worked alright but found it to be lacking on hill climbing , even after checking timing and fuel pressure. Float set right but engine lost power and had to downshift prematurely . Got my hands on the Holley 2 barrel that was the replacement for the motorcraft , and after a float swap , it was an improvement over the motorcraft. Held the engine rpms better on the hill climb. Easy to rebuild too. Did not have any trouble rebuilding the 2150 , but the Holley was just easier to me.
But all in all , anyone who has a good 2150 and can ace rebuilding it , I would say if it works for you , stick with it. I won't take that away from them. Did well on a 390 ford I had once , so they're not bad. I guess I just like and appreciate a Holley for simplicity . Love their design. Greg
 
Just looking at the intake and carb has me curious as to what lift, duration and LSA ( lobe separation angle) the cam must have for a four barrel. Wondering what cylinder head work could have been done as well . Higher compression pistons and overbore too ? Must have been a hot little 258 !

Wow , 14 mpg with a carb on a oldschool V8 is pretty darn respectable considering my 4.0 H.O. Only gets 16 mpg local at best. Have to agree , if a six is not built compression and valve train for a four barrel with higher cfm and more fuel , won't make much more power with stock compression and valve timing and specification for less fuel/air mixture. I always thought a 258 has got potential though as it is not small in cubes for a six . It's long stroke made it more a low speed / high torque engine perfect for 4wd . Just needs a lot of work to make it stronger at higher rpms if one were seeking to.
 

I have not personally owned a edlebrock carb, but this is what I have heard. The edlebrock needs less tuning but can be a real pain to actually tune, a holly needs tuned more often but is simple to work on. I have had the motor craft carb and loved it, did great on side hills, even rolled it on its side once and it stayed running. The holly is tempermental off road, on side hills, bouncy sections, and rough hill climbs it wants to flood out, I have a big holly 650DP though, total street carb. If given a choice between the two and they were free, I would probably still pick the holly. If I didn't have big hp I would probably pick the motorcraft, but would not spend the money to swap them if I already had the holly. The holly truck avenger is a off road carb that is designed to not have the problems that other hollies have off road.
 
I'd say there's good and bad in all of them. I like quadrajets when it comes to a 4barrel. Finding a good used one these days is rare, they're more complicated than others but if you get one that's right, and a good match for your engine they're hard to beat. I had one rebuilt several years ago by a good friend that worked at a Chevy dealer. It worked awesome, if I'd done that one myself back then I'd probably ended up swapping it and blaming the carb for my lack of knowledge. I know he had the attention to detail that made all the difference.

Good looking chassis and I would say the body tub will clean up real nice ! This build will be back on the road in no time ! Got to love your shop operation , you definately have all the right tools !
Sure wish I had a fork truck and overhead crane . Nice !
