Auto box gears?

Hi

I have an intermittent problem. Sometimes my 98 XJ doesnt get the final drive gear, it goes into 3rd overdrive and not any higher. If you stop and start the car the problem usually resets itself and then I have all 4 forward gears and the "overdrive" like normal. There are no strange noises and the Jeep is still ultra smooth? The only recent change I can think of is the replacement of the main seal between engine and box, as far as Im aware the box has to be dropped slightly to replace the seal? I check gearbox oil and leaks all the time and there arent any, gearbox oil level is slightly over full.

Your transmission is computer controlled and recieves input from several engine sensors. I would bet it's the throttle position sensor or speed sensor. Have you changed tire sizes without correcting the speedo?

Google this problem and include the transmission type, AW4, there's all kinds of online tech help for troubleshooting glitches with this transmission.

If you can't find the problem and want manual control over the transmission, check out www.awshifting.com
