axle suggestions

Not looking to go bigger than 33s but still want some articulation when out on the trail. I have a 87 yj with a 4.2 and going with 4.56 gearing

For 33's, you shoul dbe able to keep the stock axles... Are you running a locker? Of so, maybe an 8.8 in the rear, but the D30 is fine up front up to 35's.

Yes locker for sure front and rear. What would be a good sudpension for that soa or 6 in rc just dont like the axle wrap issues

Thats a lot of lift for 33" tires. if your going to SOA (about 5.5" lift) at a minimum I would run a 35" tire, personally I would be more in teh 38-40" tire range with a properly set up SOA.

If you have no desire to go bigger than 33" tires, and the specs you list, the gears and lockers..I would get a 8.8 or d44 rear, D35's, even with stock tires, are not a happy axle when locked. for the front, I would swap out the shafts and Pass seal for TJ shafts. I would run about 2-2.5" of lift and a 1" body lift with a flat belly skid and SYE. This will give you about the same diff clearence as a D60 and 37" tires and the belly clearence of a 5" lift.

Im not set on 33s i would really like to go soa but im being told that a traction bar in rear helps tremendously but would that also mean that i would be top heavy?

a traction bar would not make the vehicle any more top heavy... a tall suspension and a lot of un-needed weight above the theoretic center would make the vehicle top heavy. a well designed suspention that just plain works is based on some very simple principles, keep it low and keep it light.

essentially try to have the most tire under your rig you can possibly fit with as little lift as you can get away with. 80% of the suspensions that I design only use between 3-6 inches of up travel at most (most leaf springs will only allow about that range depending on the flatness and length of the spring, stock YJ leafs will net about 3" of up travel.) Some buggies I can get away with more due to the sheer fact that I am staring from scratch and building everything around 5-9" of up travel.
