Broken rear axle

RE: retreads

Hi I’m New Here, I have a 1998 TJ 4cyl, I've had it less than a year and was just told that the rear axle is broken. My Question is what are my upgrade options here. The jeep is used for off road and travel not a daily driver.

RE: 3.5" BDS or 4" RE?

A dana 44 would be my first choice :D There are kits though to upgrade the axle shafts in the factory 35...check www.4wd.com

Buy a new stock axle for now and start saving your $$$$$ for a d44, they're getting more plentiful nowadays for the tj's......

RE: Got me some rearend

Welcome to jeepz.

First off, what's broken on the axle? The 2.5L is relatively easy on parts, and depending on your setup and how you wheel an upgrade may not necessarily be needed.

RE: Adventures in the Gadget Cave

I'd go with a 1pc. axle. $400 for D44, I don't see the D35 axles. not sure how much you know about the rear end on you jeep, but the rear axle now is 1 piece(two if it broke), the axle shafts are conected to the axle hub (where the wheel gets bolted on), and on a 1pc. it's all ONE piece. You'll never break this on the road (but please don't try!) and most come with a warranty, mine came with a 10yr. but in order for me to return them, I can't have done any modification to them, what if they break on the trail and I need to weld it together to get home! Well they found their loop hole, I haven't broken it yet, and I don't hold back fromany trails. Hope this helps, you may not need a 1pc. with a 4cyl., due to power.

RE: Check out my new CarDomain Site!

prariepunk--Your talking about CJ stuff, where a two piece tapered axle setup was used. His TJ came from the factory with one piece flanged axles......tiny little toothpick size flanged axles.

I'd just keep feeding it factory shafts until you can swap in a heavier assembly.
