hey peps... or jeeps...

I was wondering whats the best lift to get 2" lift. Is it possable to put the axles on the bottom of the springs or is that a bad thing. BTW I have a 78 cj7...any info would be great.

Thanks

I have seen the axles swapped to the underside of the leaf springs but I'm not sure of any drawbacks. But yes, it's been done. Muscle car guys also do it to jack up the rear end.

SOA will give you more headaches than what it's worth. I would go with a leafspring upgrade and replace it with a 2-3 inch leaf pack lift kit. Also change out the shackles with longer ones, prefferably the greasable type.

There are many drawbacks to doing a spring over axle lift, or SOA, namely axle wrap which can be disastrous if you don't do something about it. A SOA lift gives you about 5", you will need longer shocks, brake lines, custom rear driveshaft, drop pitman arm, etc. and will be expensive and a lot of work. If you don't want to spend a lot of $, then just buy some 2.5" lift springs--with a 2.5" lift, you don't necessarily have to change your shocks, brake lines, or driveshaft (although it wouldn't be a bad idea), and it won't give you axle wrap.

Personally, I would only consider going to a "spring over axle" if I were looking at running 35" rubber or bigger. For 33"s or less, I'd do an off the shelf 4" lift and be done with it.

The main problem with SOA conversion is in the rear, where axl warp will become an unwanted visitor... It also requires a lot of fabricating to do right. SOA gives better flex, but it is not easier or cheaper than a spring suspension (even though some people claim it is, it's not if you are to do it right). What I have seen that works the best is SOA on the front end and SUA with lift on the rear. That way, you kind of get the best of both worlds, but again, it's not cheap.

Hey thanks, im looking for like 2" lift and i just looked at it and it made sence to put the axle down. But i personally would want to spend the money and do it right. What do you think is the best direction? Lift or shackle. Thanks again :-)

Best direction for your amount of lift would be a 2.5" SUA (spring under axle) kit.

Longer shackles aren't a good idea as they negatively affect caster, pinion angle, steering response, and overall handling.

All this talk about axlewrap, it's not bad in my SOA but then again I built my own spring packs to help reduce it.
