pennzoil syncromesh

changed my transmission fluid the other day with some syncromesh. it now goes into gear quite nicely. when i pulled the drain plug i had metal shavings all over the magnet which i am assuming would be from my syncronizers. just curious as to why the check/fill plug clearly states "do not remove". i took it off anyway and noticed that it had red thread lock on the threads. really seems that they do not want you changing your fluid. just thought that was odd.

oh yeah if your not sure what kind of transmission fluid you have in your jeep, put some syncromesh in there and try to save you syncronizers.

that is all

That's funny. I was on an XJ forum and there is a big debate between those that believe changing your fluid is okay, and those that believe it's bad.

What is everyone else's opinion on this? I too have heard mixed opinions on the subject. And the fact that there is a "Do not remove" sign on the plug is kind of strange. I've heard horror stories about trannies dying as a result of flushing, but logic tells me that changing fluid should be a good thing.

Of course, one may argue: why put a plug there if you arent supposed to remove it?

I need help... finals research paper due tomorow!!

I don't see why it would be a bad thing. Think about when you buy a rebuilt, or rebuild a transmission your self-- you kind of have to remove the fluid, and then put new fluid in later. That never does any damage. Or when you take a transmission out of a vehicle and put it in another- you have to change it then as well.

yeah seriously why not change it............took a T4 transmission out and it had never been changed and the fluid was like mud..........it was awful worst thing i had ever seen........no wonder the transmission went bad.........

thats cause that isnt the only fill hole. I'm pretty sure, on the AX-5 , the correct fill hole is on the passenger sides. the torx bolt you are talking about, is drivers side. But this isnt the first time ive heard people filling through that hole.

Don't know what jeep ya'll are talking about but my warrenty and main. guide that came with my 85 CJ says to change the transmission, tcase, and diff fluids every 30K. Also says in the owner's manual "a comsumption rate of 1 quart per 1000 miles is not excessive (engine oil)" That's just crazy. That means your engine could use over half the oil between oil changes......

i couldnt find another fill plug on the passenger side. oh well, i feel like such a rebel using the "do not remove" plug 8)

I don't remember where the one on the Driver's side is, but the one on the pass. side is a pain in the neck (literally) to fill. That's the one my Chiltons said to use so I did, but the one you used had to have been easier to get to.

actually what i did was ran a hose from the engine compartment to the fill hole. get yourself a helper to hold the hose in the drain plug, while you pour the fluid into the hose. blow through the hose when you are done to get the rest of the fluid into the transmission. it was pretty easy. plus the one benefit of the 4 banger is plenty of room to work. you can also sleep in the engine compartment to stay warm when the girlfriend gets mad at you.

I don't think I will ever use Syncromesh again. When I drained it after 10k it was completely silver. yes the same Silver that they paint the new Jeeps. THAT kind of spooked me. Also my drain plug was packed with shavings it looked as if the plug was the butt end of an uncut cigar. Red-line MT90 or Valvoline 75-90 Synth for me from now on.

PRO-COMP X-TERRAINS ON PRO-COMP STREET LOCKS..33X12.5X15

hahahaha mingez i clicked......then when the page opened, i clicked on the other link that said dont click. and you thought that i didnt have the balls to click didnt you

The 'Do Not Remove' plug is wrong, the fill plug is half-way up on the driver's side of the transmission. Tough to get to around the front driveshaft.

Careful with that Valvoline stuff, make sure it's not GL5. I strongly recommend the synthetic Redline MT90, specially formulated to be easy on the synchros.

The debate is on automatic trans. On a standard trans I have never heard that changing your fluid is bad. On the auto It can cause probs if the trans is on its way out. But the probs are already there. The cleaning effect of the fresh trans fluid will cause particals to be broken loose in the trans sending them throughout the valve body and such. Not a good thing. But if you service your trans like you should and dont beat the dog snot out of it, you should have no probs like the people who swear that this will cause the trans to go out. Thoes are the people who think that changing the filter and 4 quarts of fluid will fix the trans when it starts to slip. So they change the fluid and the next thing that happens is the trans goes south. They blame it in the fluid change, not stoping to think that they had probs before the change. Note: I am not saying that You should or should not change your fluid or have the system flushed. But I will say that on my Rubi everything is done by the book. On any of the vehicals I've had in the past I never changed the auto trans fluid and filter/screan. On any standard I have always changed the fluid as soon as I got the vehical. My Rubi is the first new vehical I have ever owned. That goes for the front and rear end and the transfer case.

Right, but I want to know If I should or should not change my transmission fluid. Would you if you had an Auto? Anyone.

What condition is your fluid in? How many miles has you trans got on it? Did you buy it new or used? If used did it come with service records? Does your tranie slip or give you any probs? If you think It is in good shape and want to keep it there then I would say yes. If not and you have not got the $$$ for a rebuild or new one the I would do some more investigation. A filter change cant hurt. I know I am kinda avoiding a direct yes or no, but this is something that I would hate to say yes on and see you with a bad tranie that went out and me feeling kinda guilty.

L33t... I've drained my syncrhomesh fluid after 20,000 and it was still great... and i've seen many others that turned out perfect....

i also found another good product... but expensive... is Royal Purple Synchromax...
