Season? Holiday? What are you celebrating?

I, for one, am with Linus. That's right, Charlie Brown's little buddy Linus. He knew what Christmas is all about  .

So it is Christmas time here at the TwistedCopper hut, but that's me and mine. What are you and yours celebrating this time of year?

If this is too personal for you or the mere asking offends you, just don't answer. I just thought it would be interesting to see a little deeper into some of the folks around here.

I for one am celebrating The birth of the Christ Child Jesus my personal Lord and Savior! That is what Christmas is at least thats what I have read somewhere hehehehe! Thanks for asking Tug

In our house we will be celebrating many things... The birth of Christ, the return of my wife from Afganistan, the freedom we share to be able to celebrate what we want do to all the soldiers past and present.

I am some what diffrent then most...
I celebrate Yule. The 12 days of the end of the year which encompasses the birth of Jesus Christ my lord and savior.

Many of traditions we use today come from this and other ancient pagan religions.

Some will understand what I have written here others will not. Please take some time and learn.

I think some folks understood my question but I want to clarify my explanation of what we celebrate. The reason I made this post was because I was shocked at a previous post where everyone said happy holidays, have a great season, bla bla bla. It just seems sick to me that society is dumbing down our celebration and sometimes I thinks we fall in line without realizing it. My family & I are Christians. I used the Linus thing because it was a great story with Charlie Brown trying to find the real meaning of Christmas. I guess you had to see or remember it to appreciate it, but "A Charlie Brown Christmas" doesn't get much airtime anymore. Linus quoted from Luke chapter 11:

"...And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

That's what Cristmas is all about, Charlie Brown!"

Not exactly the current agenda of promoting Santa and the maxxed out credit line, is it?

Now Copper, How can you pick on the term "Happy Holidays?" You state:

"The reason I made this post was because I was shocked at a previous post where everyone said happy holidays, have a great season, bla bla bla."

I am someone who says "happy holidays" and many other sentiments that are generic. I say these things for a specific reason. I wish good things to everyone of every religion or race, and I don't say it to exclude the christian side of this season, or to promote any other. I see nothing wrong with either sentiment, but that's just my opinion.

I do have christian beliefs but I know many do not, even though they're religous. Anyway, my term "happy holidays" had nothing to do with credit cards, shopping frenzies or any agenda.

I normally keep my tounge to myself but I am sorry, your post "shocked" me too. We all should all practice what we preach sometimes. It kills me when someone bashes others under the assumed innocence of another topic.

By the way "charlie browns christmas" is on tonight at 8 pm est on abc.

Why do we celebrate Christmas?
Most christian's celebrate Christ's birth on December 25th, but even the Romian Catholic church is not sure when Christ was born. The Julian calendar places Christ's birth around January the 6th. The debate is heated on both sides.

You add in some of the older religions out there and you find then celebrating Yule, The winter solstice, or even winters sabbath.
A big percentage celebrate the comming of the light. Putting Jesus's birth in this frame made it easyier to bring in "heritic cult sec's" into Christian religion. it took the Church itself till the 4th century to start celebrating Christmas.

But what ever you celebrate, the true and most importaint part is, you and your fellow humans are celebrating the peace, fellowship with your fellow man this day and the tranquility of the season. The victory of light over darkness...and good over evil. And millions of people will look at themselves and there neighbors that day and think good thoughts. For one day, maybe more... but it is a start.
By what ever you call it, Yule, Christmas, Honika, solstice, or the sabbath
take a good look around at yourself and fellow man and be happy that the sun will return the countdown to the winter solstice has begun, Christ was born this day to free you from sin, that god made 12 candles burn for twelve days.

Twisted,

As you must be aware, there are other days and periods of celebration which occur during the time of year when Christians celebrate the birth of Christ: Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and sometimes Ramadan (varies with the Moslem lunar calendar) to name the more well-known.

"Happy Holidays," "Season's Greetings" and the like are merely generic expressions of camaraderie and fellowship that are used when addressing people whose religious affiliation, if any, are unknown to the speaker or writer.

The use of such simple expressions of goodwill predates shopping malls and credit cards.

For my part, any and all expressions of "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings" addressed to me are perfectly acceptable and appreciated.

I just can't stand the whole P.C. thing. I don't wish my Jewish neighbors a Merry Christmas, I tell them I hope they enjoy their Chanuka, because I know that is what they do. I will, by default, wish someone I don't know a merry christmas. I will take the odds it is the right thing. You can't please all of the people all of the time. I'm just not willing to shelter who I am because I might hurt somebody's feelings. If someone wished me a pleasant Ramadan, I would not be offended. I would however let them know I am a Christian. I think grown adults can handle these things. It just seems to me we should all be proud of who we are and what we believe. Because I feel that way does in no way mean I don't respect other people's beliefs. I have been accused of wearing my heart out on my sleeve, and I guess the same thing can be said for my opinions and I let it bleed over to my keyboard from time to time. My frustration with the whole "Happy Holidays" thing started when a local kid on a register was threatened to be fired when he wished a customer a merry Christmas. The lady used to teach his sunday school class. He didn't lose his job, but it was made quite clear that was not to be tolerated. That was utterly ridiculous. That's how our society has become, so afraid of offending someone by being ourselves. I was not bashing anybody, just pointing out the obvious feelings protection mode that has befallen us - political correctness run amok. Fact is that this whole "holiday season" is a direct result of Christians, Jews, and their beliefs and traditions. I don't like that it is almost taboo to remind people of that. Some folks wrote in both posts, and you can see an obvious difference in their tones when the same topic was approached from another angle. Again, I'm not bashing anybody. I've obviously sparked a bit of anger on your part Lady, and I'm sorry if it seemed that was my intent. I guess my wording may have left that impression. I just thought I would challenge the forum to crack the PC barrier. As far as the practicing what I preach, I'm not so sure in what context you are implying that I haven't.

I celebrate other people's love of their faith, be it Judahism, Buddhism, Christian, Islam, Pagan, or lack of a theistic belief. Variety is the spice of life, and that is what makes this country the great country it is. I love the fact that we don't all believe the same things, otherwise things would be boooorrriiiinggg.

My Mother was a buddhist , and my father is a catholic. Thus, I celebrate diversity.

Happy Holidays to all! Whatever you believe. :)

Wow, I love the diversity in this forum. I think you all rock, and hope you have a great time this holiday, whatever you may be celebrating. Unless it involves sacraficing small animals, which in case, I'm not cool with that, lol.
To answer the question, I'm Christian, so I'll be celebrating (with my family), the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. :D
