Sourcing a used AW4 transmission for my XJ

'96 XJ here. I find myself in the unenviable position of trying to locate another good AW4 transmission, because my fluid just leaked out and mine's nothing but a core charge now.

How do you go about finding a used one of these in acceptable condition?

The only mechanic in town I trust took 2.5 weeks to source one with '119k' miles on it and the bell housing was cracked when it finally got there, which means it was in a wreck. He gave it a good look over without breaking it open and says everything looks ok, but he still doesn't trust it and is asking me if I want to personally try to find another one instead, and I don't know the first place to look, or how to make sure it's in decent shape.

So I'm all ears on that.

My first lead is my buddy who has access to a big junk yard back in the hills. He's asking what other model vehicles the AW4 transmission came on and he can start looking.

What Jeep years and models was my transmission in...and/or other makes of vehicles?

Although I haven't rebuilt a transmission before, I could possibly go that route if it wouldn't take that long for someone with my skill level. Hopefully a video is out there to help. I've done all my own car work for the last 30 years, although nothing deep in a motor or transmission, but about everything else. My junk yard buddy is willing to help and he's got more motor skills than I do.

Any suggestions?

i bet you can use from 91 to around 97, maybe 98. do some googling though because there was some wiring harness changes and maybe speedo mount changes.

Why not go with with a remanufactured transmission? Some carry as much as a 60 month warranty. While it costs a bit, there is less risk as these reman companies do the rebuilds daily. You source one yourself and put a couple hundred into it and something doesn't work out, you are back to square one.

RemanTransmission

Thanks again superj. Someone sent me this link and it addresses the wiring harness issue you mentioned.

Jeepergeo I'm still thinking about going with a reman. Haven't decided yet. Thanks for the encouragement though.
