Steering Rattle

RE: Bob Villa-- Jeep Style!!!!!!!!

Hey folks, here's one for ya...
I recently have been hearing a rattle when I hit any kind of bump in the road or trail. It sounds like it's coming from behind the steering wheel somewhere, but I don't feel any strange vibrations which is weird cause the noise is loud enough to think there would be vibs.
Any thoughts of what it could be? I put in a beefy steering box and new drag link ends about 2 months ago.

Grab the piece that goes between the main part of the steering column and the steering box. Try and wiggle it to see if it has any play.

As in behind the dash? Or in the steering shaft it's self.

Definatly check the steering shaft, also see if your front trac bar is loose, I used to get a rattle when Mine would loosen up. It also made the steering a little sloppy!

RE: new grill guard

I did what you guys said finally, and it's the steering shaft. I see right where the play is too. The shaft is moving around in the sleve thats coming through the firewall. There is nothing to tighten up, is there supposed to be a bushing there of some kind???

Wont start unless i hit the gas....

Hey Joopin,

I've been following this thread since I've recently had a "knocking" sound coming from high up in the steering colum near the wheel, especially when I'm driving over rough roads (with all the rain we've had in LA recently, driving on surface streets has become a daily wheelin' adventure!). So I went out this morning to check my steering shaft and it wiggles a bit but really didn't have much play in it. Now after doing that the knocking has stopped! But I was curious to know how much play your shaft has and how much it should have (if any).

Hi-Ya Joopin,

What follows might or might not apply to your 91 YJ, but...

I had an 82 CJ that made a similar noise. The cause of the noise was a failed bearing at the bottom end -- engine compartment end -- of the steering column. That bearing is replaceable.

Yeah, I shook mine around and the rattle did not go away. The place that it is loose is on the high part of the shaft, right before it goes through the firewall and into the cab. I guess I am going to have to take another look at it once it gets warm. I was looking at some new steering shafts and boy are they expensive! But there are many different upgrades which is good. But I would rather replace a bearing or something, time to break out the Chiltons.
