4WD manual lock

RE: Touching tribute to the armed forces, and families

Do any of you know where to get an inexpensive manual 4WD locking part for a 90 YJ. I am guessing I don't have enough vacum pressure to engage my front axel. It was popping for a while, now it won't engage. I have taken it apart and everything inside the axel is still good. No chips on the locking collar or splines so I figured my axel shift motor is bad. Also the vacum from the shift motor is what lighs up my 4X4 light and it doesn't come on. Any suggestions? I was reading a few posts ago and someone suggested a cable to the paggenger side. I would like to know how to do this. I imagine you could run a cable up the cab like a manual choke. Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the link Copper. I will do this today and let you know how it trned out. It's hard to drive in this Alaska winter without 4WD.

What shift motor?
Popping.....what kind of popping?

He's talking about the vacuum disconnect on the D30.

It could be a simple vacuum leak. Easiest thing to do is pull the vacuum harness and feel for pressure in the lines as somebody shifts between 2wd and 4wd. Vacuum should shift back and forth between the two lines. If the vacuum is good, the problem is in the vacuum actuator.

RE: Tightening Dana 44 Hubs

Yeah, I got the vacuum disconnect part. I was just questioning the use of the word motor. There is no shift motor, just a diaphram and the mechanical actuator assembly. I've never noticed one popping either.

RE: Tug Checking in!

i've heard a lot of people refer to it as a motor... in general definition.. a motor is something that transforms some form of energy into kinetic energy.... so i've read... but it IS a vacuum diaphram... not a spinny windy turny thing

Re: RE: Re: RE: Differential Questions

It is called an axel shift motor in my chiltons repair manual. It is actually just a diaphram that actuates the fork that moves the locking collar onto the splines of the axel. When you are not getting enough vacuum(4 to 6 psi I believe) the fork will not move the collar all the way onto the spline and will cause it to pop back. That will cause the collar to chip or crack. Or the spline to chip. I don't have a vacuum leak that I can find so I will try the manual locking.

RE: Rubicon

 I guess I could have worded my post a little better, but my point wasn't to debate the meaning of the word "motor". I was simply asking, in a round-about way, if you actually knew what you were dealing with. Sorry, I was just trying to clarify any possible confusion.

RE: Best TJ gas mileage ever!

Turns out it wasn't the "axel shift motor" after all. I did the manual lever and got everything put back together. Cleaned it up a lot, started the jeep and put it into 4wd. The light came on and it went into 4wd. The lever popped out on the dash and when I took it out of 4wd the lever went back in. While I was working on everything I was checking vacum tube connections and for out my egr valve mounts are broke and the valve is just there and not really doing anything. It is safety wired now until I can put the new one on. That should take care of everything........For now.
