Oil Pressure Gauge/Sender?

Re: RE: Re: RE: Roll Bar Paint Color

For the past few weeks, my oil pressure gauge has been acting goofy. When I'm running at highway speeds, it registers up in the 40-60 range like normal. However, when I slow down, stop, or just let it idle, it pegs up over 80. I'm pretty sure my oil pressure isn't running up to 80 at idle (at least I hope it isn't), so do you think it's the sender or the gauge itself? It usually starts after the engine has run for about 15 minutes.

It's a '94 4-banger YJ. Where is the oil sender located?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Gordon Shumway.

The sender is on the passenger side of the engine block, in front of and just below the distributor. It is a little cannister, maybe 1/3 the size of a beer can and screws right into the block and has a single wire coming from the top. It's a real easy install. When you get a new sender, get a good one. I replaced mine about 10 months ago with a cheapy (~$7) and it was done after about 3 months. I replaced it with an ever so slightly more expensive one (don't remember the brand) at $12 and so far so good. Well at least more than 3 months anyhow.

I found when I changed mine (for the same reasons), I had to purchase a special socket for it as well, I think the socket cost more than the sending unit. Something you may want to ask the sales clerk.

Thanks.....guess I'll pop the hood tonight after work and check into it.

Imagine my panic when I was sitting at a light and saw my oil pressure at 80+!!!

Thanks, Mud.....I remember reading that thread now that you bring it back up. I'll be checking the sending unit for oil loss after I get a few more cups of coffee in my weary old bones (up all night chasing storms again....when will I ever grow up....and what will I do with them when I catch one?).

RE: LOCKERS

I replaced the sender this afternoon with a Sorenson brand sensor. Cost around $20. Used a pair of Craftsman adjustable locking pliers to remove it. Took about 5 minutes to replace. Oil pressure gauge is right on again! WOOOOO HOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Oh, and Mud, it wasn't leaking any oil at all, thank goodness. However, I'm glad you mentioned that. I probably wouldn't have checked into it if you hadn't. Thanks, bud!

Great to hear, Sparky!!! You caught yours earlier than I caught mine (procrastination does not always pay! ). Took me 2 1/2 - 3 qts. to get it home from WalMart (about 10 miles). Son/step son/ bonus son (you know what I mean) borrowed it and it went out on him. Glad to hear your "special" tool worked as well as mine! Glad I could be of help.
